American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, 2004- Present

Dr. Christopher Chen was raised in Rockville, Maryland. He attended the Johns Hopkins University for undergraduate education and received a degree in biomedical engineering. Dr. Chen then went on to study medicine at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri where he received his Medical Degree.

After finishing his undergraduate medical education, he pursued Orthopaedic Surgery residency training at the St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital/Columbia University in New York, NY. During this time he found his true passion for hip and knee conditions. Dr. Chen then went on to continue his training, undertaking an Adult Total Joint Reconstruction Fellowship with Dr. Charles Engh, Dr. Gerald Engh, Dr. Andy Engh, and Dr. James McAuley at the renowned Anderson Orthopaedic Research Institute in Alexandria, Virginia.

Following his year of fellowship training, he moved to Berkeley, California to begin his orthopaedic practice. Through his extensive training and experience, he has developed an expertise in joint replacement surgeries, such as total knee replacement, total hip replacement, and knee arthroscopy.

Dr. Chen is a pioneer in the Bay Area for the Anterior Approach Total Hip Replacement surgery, first utilizing this method in 2005. The anterior approach is a minimally invasive technique for total hip replacement which requires no postoperative restrictions and can offer a less painful recovery and a faster return to normal activities than the traditional total hip replacement. He also uses computer assisted technologies for total knee replacements, which can improve the accuracy of implant position. He works closely with his hospital to help develop and implement enhanced recovery protocols to minimize postsurgical pain, shorten hospital stays, and optimize outcomes.

Dr. Chen is dedicated to helping his patients improve their quality of life and looks forward to meeting you and caring for your orthopaedic needs.

Outside of his orthopaedic practice, you will find Dr. Chen on the tennis courts with his wife and two kids or possibly hiking and camping in the Sierras.
